The U.S. has Elizabeth Stroutt, we have Charlotte Wood and thank god we do. This confronting at times brutally honest book was my last for 2019 and remains the best I read all year. At times hilarious and then feeling as if someone had reached from the pages and slapped me, this unflinching portrait of three aging women, is breathtaking in it’s clarity, empathy and savage honesty. “The Weekend” belongs on the top of your summer reading list.
